Hocking Hills Elopement | Christy & Michael

Wedding

Some love stories have a way of coming full circle, and Christy and Michael’s is one of those stories that feels like it was always meant to happen. From an unexpected reunion in a Wendy’s line to a surprise proposal involving a handmade puzzle box, their story is full of the sweetest little details. Their intimate Hocking Hills elopement was the perfect reflection of who they are as a couple: thoughtful, adventurous, and happiest when they’re spending time together.

This wedding was especially meaningful to me because I’ve actually known Christy since high school! We were both in marching band together, although she was a senior when I was just a freshman. I can still remember looking up to her back then, so getting to photograph her wedding day all these years later was such a special full-circle moment.

A Love Story That Began Years Ago

Christy and Michael’s story actually goes all the way back to high school. Michael was originally more of a friend of Christy’s older brother, and although they knew of each other, their lives eventually took them in different directions.

Years later, they unexpectedly crossed paths again while in line at Wendy’s. Michael recognized her and asked, “Hey, don’t I know you?”

I love that something as ordinary as waiting in line for food could end up being the beginning of such a wonderful love story.

The two reconnected and slowly developed a friendship, occasionally getting together to watch scary movies. Over time, that friendship grew into something more. There’s something so sweet about a relationship that develops naturally, especially when two people have been loosely connected for so many years without realizing where life would eventually take them.

A Handmade Puzzle Box Proposal

When Michael decided to propose in April, he came up with such a creative and thoughtful way to ask Christy to marry him. He actually made her an incredible puzzle box that she would have to solve to discover the engagement ring hidden inside!

Of course, the timing didn’t go exactly as he might have imagined.

Christy laughed as she told me that she had a migraine that day, so it took her a while to feel like sitting down and working through a puzzle. Poor Michael had to wait patiently for her to feel up to it!

But once she finally started solving the box and realized what was happening, she was completely surprised and so happy.

I absolutely love proposals that feel personal to a couple, and the time and thought Michael put into creating something just for Christy made this one especially memorable.

An Intimate Wedding at Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel

Since Christy and Michael both love hiking and spending time outdoors, choosing Hocking Hills for their wedding day made perfect sense.

They exchanged vows in a small, intimate ceremony at Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel, surrounded by the people closest to them. There is something so lovely about a wedding day that doesn’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful. Their celebration felt relaxed, personal, and entirely true to them.

After the ceremony, everyone gathered for a small family lunch before we headed out for one of my favorite parts of the day: spending the afternoon exploring Hocking Hills together.

Instead of a traditional wedding reception, these two chose to spend their first hours as newlyweds doing something they already love. Hiking!

Wedding Portraits at Laurel Falls and Ash Cave

One of the things I was most excited about for Christy and Michael’s Hocking Hills elopement was getting to use our special photography permit to visit Laurel Falls. It’s such a beautiful setting for portraits, and having the opportunity to photograph these two surrounded by the natural landscape was wonderful.

We spent the next few hours hiking, exploring, and stopping for photographs along the way. I love when couples make room in their wedding day to simply enjoy being together, without feeling rushed from one event to the next.

Eventually, we made our way to the iconic Ash Cave, one of the most recognizable and breathtaking locations in Hocking Hills.

And one of my favorite unexpected parts of the afternoon? Watching practically every person who passed by stop to congratulate Christy and Michael!

It was like hiking around with a pair of celebrities. Everywhere we went, people were smiling, complimenting Christy, and wishing the newlyweds well. There was something so joyful about watching complete strangers share in their excitement. I think it’s impossible not to smile when you come across a bride and groom hiking through the woods on their wedding day.

A Wedding Day That Felt Entirely Like Them

What I loved most about Christy and Michael’s wedding was how perfectly it reflected their relationship.

Their story started with an unexpected reunion, grew through friendship and scary movie dates, and eventually led to a handmade puzzle box and a very happy surprise. So of course their wedding day would include a beautiful little ceremony, lunch with family, and hours spent hiking through one of Ohio’s most beautiful places.

There was no need for an elaborate schedule or a packed reception. Just the people they love, the outdoors, and the excitement of finally being married.

And personally, it was such a gift to photograph someone I once looked up to as a freshman in marching band. I never could have imagined all those years ago that I’d someday be hiking through Hocking Hills with Christy and her new husband, documenting such a meaningful day in their lives.

Christy and Michael, thank you for inviting me into your celebration. I loved every minute of our adventure together, and I’m so happy that life brought you back into each other’s lives. Here’s to many more hikes, scary movies, and unexpected adventures together.
